Sparrow Breeding
Breeding colonies of the English sparrow can be quite densely packed with nests being as close as one foot apart. They are loyal creatures and tend to stay with the same partner and nesting site for life. Nesting begins in early spring and can last until late summer. A clutch of two to five eggs is normal with incubation shared by both mum and dad. It takes about fourteen to sixteen days for the birds to fledge but their parents need to feed them for another fortnight. To fledge just means they have developed the wing feathers that enable them to fly. This is usually the responsibility of the male bird as the female is preparing to lay the next set of eggs as soon as the first brood has left the nest. She can lay up to four times in a good year.
